The Aller Ship

Here, we have compiled some history about the Ship Aller. Jacob & Magdalena Hirning and their family immigrated to the United States on it. Here are some facts on it:

SS ALLER, built in 1885 by Fairfield Co. Ltd., Glasgow. 4,966 tons; 133,53 meters (438.1 feet) long x 14,56 meters (47.8 feet) broad; straight bow, 2 funnels, 4 masts; screw propulsion, service speed 17 knots. 18 February 1886, launched. 24 April 1886, maiden voyage, Bremen-Southampton-New York. 1897 masts reduced to two. 18 September 1897, last voyage, Bremen- Southampton-New York. 21 October 1897, first voyage, Genoa-Naples-New York. 16 November 1902, last voyage, Genoa- Naples-New York. 1902 sold; 1904 scrapped.

Jacob Hirning & his family traveled by train from South Russia to Bremen, Germany, a coast city. They boarded the SS Aller sometime in 1893, and traveled to New York, USA. A story that has been told is that all the Hirnings except for Karl, who was 3, became seasick. Karl, at that age, ran all over the boat, and did not become ill.

They arrived in New York City on Oct. 26, 1893. Jacob's ticket number was #831. Their ages were as follows: Jacob, 55
